NTCA (National Tax and Customs Administration) Data Warehouse Exadata X7 Introduction and Integration

Client Description

The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is a governmental organization in Hungary responsible for the collection of taxes and customs duties, as well as enforcing tax-related regulations. Its duties include tax audits, providing guidance to taxpayers, overseeing customs procedures, and detecting financial fraud. The organization aims to improve the efficiency of the tax system and ensure fair contribution to public finances.

Project General Description

The NAV undertook a major technological upgrade of its data warehouse infrastructure with the implementation of the Exadata X7 platform. This large-scale project aimed to enhance data management capacity, optimize performance, and ensure regulatory compliance. The introduction of Exadata X7 has enabled NAV to manage petabytes of data more efficiently, significantly reduce service response times, and consolidate its data warehouse solutions, which previously operated on separate infrastructures.

Challenge

The Oracle Exadata X7 is a high-end, integrated hardware and software platform specifically designed for high-performance database operations. NAV chose this system because it can efficiently handle over 4-5 petabytes of data, while delivering exceptional performance for complex queries and data analyses.

The migration of NAV's data warehouse to the Exadata X7 platform was a complex, multi-phase process. More than 20 different databases had to be transferred, ensuring continuous operations and data integrity throughout. Key steps included analyzing data structures, designing an optimal data model, and fine-tuning performance.

Special attention was given to synchronizing Oracle versions, ensuring all databases were compatible with the new Exadata environment. This involved performing necessary version upgrades and installing required patches.

Network segmentation was a crucial element in the security strategy. Separate network segments were created for development, testing, and production environments, ensuring no unintended data flow between them. In addition, strict access control policies were implemented to safeguard the system.

How we helped?

  • Handling Large Data Volumes
  • One of the main reasons for implementing the Exadata X7 system was to efficiently process the vast amount of data managed by NAV, amounting to 4-5 petabytes. The Exadata X7 provides the specialized infrastructure required for this task.
  • Performance Improvement
  • The new system significantly enhances data processing speed and efficiency, which is crucial for NAV's operations, where the rapid processing of tax returns and financial transactions is essential.
  • Reduction of Service Times
  • With the introduction of the Exadata X7, service times have been drastically reduced, improving customer experience and increasing NAV’s operational efficiency in daily tasks.
  • Consolidation of Unique Infrastructures
  • The Exadata X7 enabled the unification of previously separate data warehouse solutions, improving data consistency and reducing redundancy across systems.
  • Synchronization of Oracle Versions
  • As part of the project, Oracle database versions were harmonized, ensuring system compatibility and simplifying future upgrades.
  • Backup Configuration
  • A complex backup strategy was developed on the Exadata X7 system, including regular full and incremental backups. These processes are automated and scheduled, minimizing the need for manual intervention.
